HABITAT FOR HUMANITY...

Building homes, communities and hope

"Our vision is a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Our work extends beyond building and repairing houses – it also addresses land security, gives communities access to clean water and
sanitation, provides education and training, and offers families in desperate need real hope for the future"

In 2017 the Rotary Club of Geelong Central, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Victoria, completed our first Habitat for Humanity home build in Rix Street Herne Hill.

Habitat for Humanity build safe, decent and affordable housing for those who are currently living in unsustainable, unsuitable or unsafe housing situations and who cannot afford or manage to own their own home. The Habitat motto is “a hand up, not a hand out”, and so the homes they build they sell back to their partner families at 95% of market value and provide an interest free mortgage facility. Partner families must meet certain criteria and provide 500 hours of “sweat equity” to help with the build process.

Our partner family for the Rix Street project was single dad Michael and his daughter Kiani. The build was completed in record time for a Habitat for Humanity build in Victoria much to the amazement of everyone. This was largely due to the tireless efforts of Rotary Club of Geelong Central members.

In particular Max Findlay who contributed a huge numbers of hours and his considerable expertise to ensure the build when as smoothly and quickly as possible.

Max was recently awarded the annual Habitat for Humanity Victoria Chairman’s award for his incredible effort in this project.
